I have used the cd-cassette adapters and find they work pretty well, though you do have a bit of fidelity loss. and as noted, the problems with the cd player skipping.
look closely at your radio/cassette player, sometimes (rarely) they have input jacks that allow an auxilliary input. if you have one, use it instead of the cassette adapter
