OK, ignore everything I've said. I misunderstood your "symmetry" concept.
I reread your first post and now I get what you're saying. You're right -- the rope does have to burn at the same rate at each point regardless of which way the burn is traversing the rope.
Is there such a thing as a non-symmetrical rope, following your definition of symmetry?
