The + format seems to be more expensive, but the - format is more widely used.

Back when I bought my DVD burner, I got the Sony DRU 500a, because it supported ALL formats, but now that I've had it for a year or so, I've NEVER needed to use the + format. Not that there's anything wrong with it, other than price.

I think you'd be safe with a -/-rw drive, but then again, you wouldn't be able to view dvds that were recorded by friends or whatever in the + format. (Not that that would happen every day).
