Nina awoke from her sleep, shaken by harrowing dreams, dreams that blinked quickly into history, telling stories, broken and distorted by time. Some of the images were from her memory, things she had forgotten and things she could not forget, but others were images she did not know or understand. The past lives of her companions had been revealed to her in dreams, but the events were so fragmented she could not piece them together.
She found she had been covered by something, a cloak, and her companions were sleeping close by. Anca was at her side, breathing heavily and nudging her with his nose.
She remembered all that had happened and knew that Vanelee had taken care of her, after all. She crept silently to where he slept fitfully near her. She knelt beside him and watched his chest rise and fall as he breathed. She reached out with one trembling hand to touch his face, but withdrew it quickly, realizing the folly in this. She did not believe in love, not anymore.
As she drifted back to sleep, she felt an aching in her stomach that spread through her chest. The journey had not even begun and already she felt doubt creeping in. She had vowed to take this risk, she was born to take it, but maybe she truly wasn't ready for it.
