XP, i was all about 2000 never thought i'd upgrade to XP for the same reasons most people listed, got it with a new laptop, and haven't looked back,.
its more stable than 2000, some nicer productivity features and you can turn off the nice stuff gui stuff if you want to, but you also have the option of customizing it.
so far i haven't really found the need to have xp pro over home, on all systems except the p4 hyper threaded, which came with xp pro anyway.
it boots faster, shutsdown faster and killing rogue programs is a lot easier.
98 would be better on a really low end system that you played a lot of older dos games on, though they often have issues there too.
