I've never understood people talking about heavy recoil on a 12ga. It never seemed to be that much to me. Then again, I'm used to things like Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44magnum, and I don't think it has overmuc recoil.
To date, the only weapons that have beaten me up were rifles. One was, oddly, a .223, but I attribute that beating to an absolutely atrocious stock. The blasted thing was painful just to shoulder (some oddball folding hard plastic thing). The other was a Lee-Enfield "Jungle carbine" in .303 British. It beat me up because of the so-called recoil pad on the butt. Why they call an undersized brick of steel-hard rubber (1" x 3.5" or so) a recoil pad, I don't know. All I know is that the bloody thing like to wore a hole in my shoulder. I've got a coupla .30-06's that don't have near the percieved recoil of that lil beast.
