Nina groaned. Why did they have to interfere? It was easy enough for them to assume that the weak little girl would be in trouble, but actually she had been handling herself fine without their assistance.
No matter. Swinging her staff up over her head, she encased herself and the gargoyle mage in a shielded vacuum, where they could not be seen by the others and could battle without interruption.
The gargoyle laughed maliciously and lifted himself into the air. Nina focused on his chest, feeling the pumping heart beneath it. She raised one closed fist to the level of her face. When she opened her trembling hand, a blast of brilliant red energy erupted from her palm and swept over the beast. It cried out in pain and dove toward her. She dodged it effortlessly, clutched her staff, and gained control of the gargoyle for a moment, sending it crashing to the earth. The creature was almost too strong for her telekinetic capabilities and it knew that one blow had weakened her. Shaking off the blow, it began gathering energy and power from within, preparing to attack.
