I actually did a variation of this in school roaming the halls and it worked a lot. I would unfocus my eyes and imagine a piece of blank paper. I actually escaped the notice of hall monitors a few times while in plain view and they weren't distracted by a conversation, etc . I was seen every time when I didn't use this method, but using it I was rarely caught or seen, or at least not acknowledged as being there. As a kid I theorized that all ppl could detect another person subconciously by thought activity and not sight alone (the old "see but not observe" adage). I had a lot of theories like this when I was supposed to be learning in class  .
