Maybe it just has to do with having memories.
I'm currently teaching 6th graders for my practicum and I'm absolutely horrified that most of these kids were born after Nirvana's Nevermind came out.
The more memories you have the more distance you feel from your youth, the faster things seem to be moving.
At least, that might contribute to that feeling somewhat.
