Leave the shaving cream/gel/oil in for a minute to let it penetrate. Shave with mild hot water, rinse with cold water to close up pores and the theory goes prevents ingrown hairs.
Stretch the skin as tight as you can with your other hand to get as close to a flat surface as you can.
