Welp, Now I do believe that everyone that was FREED from the matrix was contacted, not just "realized." Thus I have to say that this isn't a good excuse. Killing to escape the matrix doesn't do anything. If anything it would get an agent to contact you and kill you... as you're wasting energy. Instead it'd be smarter to just wait for the good guys to find you and contact you where you will still be alive rather than dead.
