I'll jump in from a male perspective. Hell yeah, we all knew it was platonic. Lap sitting, hugging, standing arm-in-arm, backrubs. We were a close circle of friends in college, but we were just casual friendly with each other. I was dating the same girl the whole way through college (now my wife), and neither of us had a problem with casual friendliness. Sex with friends would have been a whole 'nother matter.
