I'm pretty sure that Peter Jackson has said there will be no new versions after the extended. So those of you waiting for a super-duper delux edition are wasting your time. Might as well pick up whatever version you want now.
And like redlemon said, the extended dvds were announced at the same time as the theatrical versions. There is no use in saying they're trying to scam us out of more money. You should save that for studios who announce special editions years after the original dvd was released.
