I don't hold a grudge against Japan or their cars. I'm just saying, to each his own, but people that hate Japanese cars often do hate them for a reason.
I guess I'm dreaming, but I want the car market to go back to the 70s. 20-cent gas, cars made of steel and not plastic, rear wheel drive on pretty much anything, and the roar of a 6+ litre V8 engine under the hood. Probably never going to happen.
Sure, they're efficient, quiet, etc. But you can't tell me new cars (AVERAGE ones, Nissans and Mercedes-Benz cars with 35 airbags don't count) are safer than the good ol' boats the big 3 USED to make. My car's bumper is steel, as in stamped steel 3/8 of an inch thick. If a dude in a new civic with his plastic covered styrofoam bumper (or any new car for example) plowed onto my side of the road and hit me dead on, what car would have more damage? Lesse, his blown airbags, new bumper cover, new fenders, possibly hood, vs. my "press the bumper shock absorbers back out" and maybe a new grill and some fender repair. A buddy of mine has a '87 Dodge truck, and was rear-ended by a Mazda Protege. The Mazda was totalled, and chipped the chrome on the truck's bumper in the process.
I also find that it's mostly imports that have USELESS options. I know another guy that's afraid to put the headers on his '03 Altima himself because he'd have to unbolt the engine and lift it up a bit...and he has electronically controlled automatic-stiffness-adjusting motor mounts and if he screws them up, the ignition system will disable and it'll cost him a small fortune to have it fixed. WHY THE FUCK DO YOU NEED AUTOMATIC ENGINE MOUNTS? Sad. My car has power nothing (literally...not brakes, windows, steering, NOTHING.) and I like it that way. Break down? What's that mean? Not fixable by anybody with a shop manual, a wrench, and some spare time? What's that mean? Try dropping the tranny in your civic in your driveway in less than a week.
Well now I'm rambling. My point is, if you want to buy Japanese, fine. Just don't pull a CSTH and spend hours upon hours pondering "why oh why is the economy floating out of the country? I'll hop in my Honda, drive home to my Hitachi TV, watch the new Kia and Toyota commercials, and think about it some more." and whine when there are people with opinions varying from your own.
