yeah ive been working with ameritrade for 2 months now, i like there style,
tips:
watch the stock for a while several montsh befor you acualy put money in, learn the paterns, learn what affects it, does a negative jobs market hurt it? does it gain when bush gives a 'happy' speach... etc

bigest tip though is to watch and read EVERYTHING about the stock and company befor you buy.
