yah I just have all my updates for XP/2000 burned to a cd so i don't have to worry about grabbing 'em again...
also, there's a command-line tool from microsoft called
hfnetchk that will tell you what updates your system needs...then you can download them individually from download.microsoft.com
i probably use that more than windows update...
also remember, that after you get sp1a you should run windowsupdate again to get the more recent patches, but your required downloads will be much smaller.
