I like a lot of the names mentioned above. here are some others that I like that havent been mentioned:

Katrina & the Waves (yes, I actually own the Walking on Sunshine album. its pretty good all the way through - happy music my brother calls it, derisively.)
Chryssy Hinde & the Pretenders (any and all of her stuff)
Patti Smith (Because the Night, People have the power)
Scandal (featuring Patty Smythe) - The Warrior, powerful song
the Eurhythmics (Annie Lennox has an awesome voice)
