Quitting is rough. I did it cold turkey several years ago. Would wake up at night dreaming about smoking. Thought I was going out of my mind. The physical addiction is easiest to break - its gone in less than a week - so patches or gum aren't needed after that. Its the habit of having a smoke at break, or following a meal or whatever your routine is that is the roughest. I used to pull one out of my shirt pocket everytime I got in my car. Then one day as I was getting in my car - well over a year after I quit - I found myself reaching for one. Freaked me out. The mental addiction is scary.
Good luck. And don't worry if you gain weight. Losing weight after you've quit smoking is far easier than quiting smoking itself.
