Maybe the real reason hockey is not big on TV in the states is that for good TV coverage, the production people have to have played hockey to be able to anticipate what is going to happen. If you are lucky enough to have the Hockey package on digital tv, you will see the difference in the coverage on Hockey Night in Canada and the ESPN production.
Also the announcers make a big difference, the Canadian ones have played hockey or followed it since they were kids.
Also, HNIC will go for long periods of time without having commercials, whereas ESPN is constantly interupting the game with endless commercials.
Watch a game broadcast by Bob Cole and follow the play or listen to the babble and drone of Gary Thorne. You would think you were listening to a game on Radio with Thorne, except for the fact that they don't talk as much on radio.
