Although I happen to agree with you, this point is certainly debatable. ACLU protects "individual rights and liberties". The ACLU holds that the constitutional right to bear arms is a collective right and not an individual right. They are somewhat backed up by the only Supreme Court ruling that deals with this issue. That ruling, however, is considered ambiguous by many. Some other lower court rulings have made the assumption that the right to bear arms is an individual right. The current Justice Department has made the same assumption. I know there are some gun rights groups in California trying to push forth a case that would force the Supreme Court to make a clear ruling on this issue. Though the odds aren't good, if this suceeds, I think the ACLU would be forced to take a position on gun rights. As it is, however, I think it i unfair to label them hypocrites.
