I've just been looking into this.

I kinda like the Canon Optura 20.
Has a mike input (not all of them do)
The Optura Xi looks good to, and has audio balance controls.

The Optura 20 is about $700.
I found the Xi online for $1200 (with extra battery and such)

Look for
Good software
Extra Batteries
Color Viewfinder
Audio Inputs/Outputs
Firewire port (if your PC/Mac has a firewire port)
All the Cables you need (video/firewire/ etc.)

I wasn't interested in the Digital Camera part, so haven't looked to much at that.

I played with a cheap JVC and didn't like it. The mounting for a tripod blocks access to the tape door. You have to take the tripod mount off to swap tapes. Annoying.
