Atrocities were committed by both sides in the war. But that's what happens when you have young kids, without proper training, being forced into the military to fight an unpopular war, scared for their lives. They observe their buddies blown to bits by a civilian who has a grenade hidden in their clothing, and decide that they won't take that chance with the next civilian who approaches them. Same thing happens in Iraq.
Why sensationalize stories like this? Oh yeah, I forgot... our military are a bunch of thugs who kill for pleasure and who work for a bloodthirsty president. At least, that's the feeling the writer wants you to get from this article.
You could stereotype ANY profession based on the actions of the bad apples, like cops who shoot first and ask questions later, dentists and doctors who rape their patients, under anesthesia, teachers who abuse children. Does everyone in these professions act this way?
It sickens me sometimes, the lack of understanding so much of our population has about or military and the professional, highly trained men and women who serve in it. We get more bad ink than Saddam, it seems. And the really sad part is that I can't think of a way to fix it and get our military back in the good graces of the public, short of having to repel a conventional invasion of our own territory. Which will never happen, because every OTHER military knows better.
Just one of the many ways (shitty pay, shockingly bad veteran's medical care) our country says thanks to the men and women who volunteer to serve her. Veterans day is coming up, November 11. Enjoy your day off of work, and try to thank a veteran. Especially a Vietnam vet. Those guys and Korean vets had it worse than anyone who has ever worn the uniform.
