the average back in the NFL only lasts like 4 years. With injuries abound in the NFL, it's not the best decision, unless they made those trades now, while he still has definitive value.

Actually, the average NFL running back lasts for only 2.5 years.
(saw it on ESPN)

Actually, he's only 21, so he has a
real long while to go.
I, too am puzzled over this. Why would my hometown Bills go for Willis McGahee when their depth chart in the backfield is as deep as can be? They have Travis Henry (who they just signed to an extension), Olandis Gary (who they just signed), and a few other backs who shined in last year's preseason. I can only come up with two theories on why the Bills took a flier on Willis.
1. Travis Henry is physically shaky in the eyes of Gregg Williams and Tom Donahoe. He fumbled 11 times last year, and was knocked out cold twice in games.
2. Tom Donahoe is banking on McGahee coming back strong near the end of this year, then swinging a huge deal for next year involving Henry or McGahee.
I really am puzzled.
What 'chu talkin' bout, Willis?
