It's ah-KEE-ra. The japanese language is built more on syllables for what we think of as letters. So "ah" would be one 'letter', "ki (pronounced KEE)" would be another and "ra (which would sound strange to us, because they pronounce their r syllables differently)" is the last.
In short, you were right.
Note: I only have a VERY basic understanding of the Japanese language, so I could be wrong, which I'm sure someone will point out if I am.
