As far as I know <a href="http://www.hrgiger.com/">gigers</a> original concept didn't included the queen. The victims would be cocooned and transformed into an egg. I think that would make the alien more "perfect" (The alien is supposed to by the perfect organism) because it would not depend on a central "leader" or "bithmachine".
