No, he was saying that because they were religious, and people from their religion/ethnic background had been senselessly killed, they should not be making or supporting these films, except that they were greedy. Had he said this about a Methodist, Mormon, or a Muslim, he would not have been fired or have caused controversy, because those religions aren't hyper-sensitive to charges of being greedy. (you could argue that these people too had been senselessly persecuted at some point.)
Well, he might have been fired, it's never a good idea to openly criticize the big boss, but it wouldn't have caused such a controversy or gotten the Anti-Defamation of Methodists League involved.
