It could be something nefarious, chances are it isn't.
Do you use seperate accounts on the one computer? I know that if one or more users are logged onto the computer at one time then sometimes you can get a similar message to yours.
Just ctrl-alt-delete and click the users tab and a list of who's who will display. I don't know if it picks up outside "guests" but it picks up all the different accounts.
You can always try the netstat -a approach in a dos window or go over to download.com and do a search on "network" you get a list of free to try programs that might suit you.
If you don't want to go to all that trouble or if you're still worried about it just install a software firewall. Zonealarm is pretty solid though others will disagree.
