Quote:
And while I'm at it, I wasn't calling you a liberal there fitherton, maybe you are, but that’s not the issue. There ARE liberals out there, and they ARE very mean spirited lately and they ARE funny when they are out of power, because they say the most outrageous and crazy things.
|
I know you wren't calling me a liberal. As far as out of power liberals being mean spirited, conservatives are the same way when they are out of power. Neither gets anything acomplished by being snippy. Oversimplifiying everything in terms of liberal v. conservative, which i i am doing in this paragraph, accomplishes nothing.
Quote:
People on the left I call liberals. For some reason people don’t' LIKE being called liberals these days, and something like only 11% of the population (I forget exactly) would identify themselves as a liberal.
|
People don't like to be called liberal because it has become a loaded word, used for derision by those who think of themselves to be conservative.
For example:
Quote:
Liberals are filled with so much hate these days. I find them quite cute as long as they are out of power.
|
What is the point of that statement? A snide comment with no other purpose than poking fun at liberals when you really have no credible reason to think that anyone who posted even IS liberal, or making a statement on behalf of their "liberalness".
Quote:
You are saying you are pushed to be a liberal because of Rush Limbaugh? You become liberal to somehow spite him?
|
There you go again. Regardless of what anyone is actually trying to say with their comments you can't resist trying to turn this thread into some sort of "liberal v. conservative" argument instead of taking people's comments at face value.
Liberal is a very broad word by nature since apparently the liberal label can apply to anyone who is to the left of you, from a moderate republican to an anarchist. As such, it is generally meaningless when actually describing a real person. Arnold schwarzenegger has what some would consider liberal views on abortion rights, is he one of those damn liberals? Orrin hatch supports stem cell research, is he one of those damn liberals? Calling either of these people liberals is clearly innaccurate. What if arnold or orrin, all other things being equal, also supported the marriage penalty tax? You'd lump them in with those damn liberals. And you'd be wrong.
Anyone who defines every choice discussion or action in terms of the conflict between liberal and conservative really needs to get some sort of perspective. That kind of black and white thinking is part of why politics in america is more posture than substance.
