For every moderated forum, there's a thousand jack-a$$es wanting to post to them. The only difference between this and other moderated (ie most) forums is that people seem to like to talk about how the forum is moderated. If nobody brought it up, I think few of us would ever know it was moderated.
I'm not sure why, but there seems to be a lot of people talking about whether they should participate, and whether or not mods = evil. Maybe it's because the people here tend to be people that like to think about and discuss the world around them.
And Powder, by asking the very question, it looks like you're already hanging!
