It is much easier to move forward than straight up against gravity. Also, by swinging your arms together, you recruit a lot more torso muscle to keep yourself upright and the rope moving. When you swing your arms while running, you rotate around the spine, and the arms are coordinated to balance each other out. That being said, you might find that jump roping can put a lot of wear and tear on your body. You have to figure out if it works for you.
