Facing heavy armor with a rapier is not the best weapon choice, although going against lightly armored foes at the height of rapier use, of course the rapier is the best choice. There's too many factors to consider when saying which bladed weapon is a better choice in a particular situation. Also at the pique of rapier popularity the preferred dueling practice was with a rapier and a offhand dagger. A method made popular by Spanish fencers, which was taken back to the east by Musashi and adapted for katana use, using a offhand wazikaze (sp?).
