Well, ever since the beginning of hockey, they have never been able to promote the game like other sports have. Remember the glory days of the Oilers with Gretzky putting up astronomical numbers? Sure you do, but not the general public. The NHL blew a huge opportunity with Gretzky. The NBA capitalized with Bird and Magic and they were able to set the tone for profits for the next 20 years.
Hockey is still an underground and prodominately white sport. Not being racist, just realistic. I doubt hockey will ever appeal on a wide stage to minorities like it does for whites.
Oh, and another question, why on earth do we have three teams in the metro-NYC area?
If I were to clean up the league, I'd dump the Islanders, Penguins, Thrashers, Blue Jackets, Lightning, Panthers, Sharks, and Predators. There's no need for any of these teams. Plus, it would boost other team's rosters and make the league more exciting.
