The Future's War.
For those of you who know that I have been writing a science fiction series. Here is the book that started it all. Originally titled "Invasion," I renamed it "The Future's War," after realizing I had so many ideas that I needed to write a series.
In the series, this is the sixth book. And here is the opening.

Lieutenant Marc Revolver heard the order, “Launch all fighters!” Seconds later his fighter had left the fighter bay on the U.W.S. Freedom and he was flying along side the flagship of the United Worlds of Sol, looking out into the starry expanse. He checked his sensor panel and saw that his squadron had assumed a defensive formation. Marc knew his mission, all he could think about were five words spoken in the briefing “Defend Earth at all costs.”
The fighter squadron sat next to the U.W.S. Freedom for about a minute standard time or an eternity according to Marc, who was waiting for something on his radio to break the silence. He knew that this was the calm, and the storm was not far away. Finally, a voice came from the radio and Marc listened, hanging on to every word as if they would be the last words he would hear.
“This is Fleet Captain Richard Moss, Captain of the U.W.S. Freedom to all Solforce ships, citizens of the United Worlds of Sol, and people of Earth. All of you in Solforce know why we’re here, but many of the civilians don’t. The Elatens are on their way and with them, the Hulans. We have not been on the best of terms with these two governments since our first contact with them. Their mission is to wipe out the population of Earth at all costs. Our mission is to stop them by any and all means necessary. I will not allow the extinction of the Human race. For if we Humans perish then so do the works of Shakespeare, the music of Mozart, the knowledge of Einstein, and the accomplishments of Gary Moss.
“Although those of you on Earth have been kept in the dark on this; we have reached out into the galaxy and made many allies. I have contacted all of them and they have all said that they will help our cause in any manner for which they can. And you have my word that when the dust settles today, Earth will still be a shining beacon of light in this dark expanse.”
That was too short. Marc knew that Fleet Captain Moss was not one for speeches, but he’s leading a fleet of three hundred ships not counting the fighters to protect Earth and that’s all he could come up with for a speech? And what did he mean by our allies helping us? Marc checked his sensors and saw no trace of any ships other the three hundred Solforce ship and their many fighters. Marc’s mind began to race he needed to calm down, he had been in battle before and he knew that the needed to focus, to find some clarity before all hell broke loose.
Marc gazed out the forward window; he couldn’t take it any more. When were the ships going to arrive? This was the worst part of being a fighter pilot. Marc hated the wait. He wanted to do something, take some sort of action, and to make a difference. But all he could do was sit there and wait.
Then it was as if space opened up in front of him, hundreds of artificial wormholes formed as even more ships came pouring out of the wormholes. Marc looked at his sensor panel; all he could look at were two numbers. One thousand Elaten ships and one thousand Hulan ships. This was it; the storm had arrived.
Finally a challenge; Marc had flown countless times during the Veron war, but never against such odds. The Verons didn’t have energy shields, but he did. Spheres of energy surrounding every Solforce ship, they were almost impenetrable. The Verons didn’t have them, and neither did the Elatens, but the Hulans did. The only advantage that he had over the Hulans was their ships had a spinning section for artificial gravity; it created a small instability in their shields.
Sound came from Marc’s Radio. It was Captain Moss’s voice again. “This is Fleet Captain Moss, captain of the U.W.S. Freedom and commander of the first United Worlds Fleet to the Elaten and Hulan vessels. You are in violation of United Worlds space. Turn back now and we will overlook this incident. Failure to heed this warning will result in your ships being boarded, searched and escorted out of our territory. If you resist, we have authorization to use lethal force.”
The Elaten ships pulled just inside weapons range and space lit up as ion cannons and phase beams cut through the darkness. Moments later, space lit up again as the United Worlds ships returned fire. Off in the distance, Marc could make out Elaten and Hulan fighters rushing out from the fleet and then Marc’s radio gave him his next set of orders, “All fighters, break and attack!” Marc was about to issue orders to his squadron when a phase beam passed only a few feet away from his fighter. Marc looked over just in time to see the beam slice through the shields of the fighter next to him and tear it up.
“John! You there? John come in!” Marc knew it was hopeless, but he had to try.
“He’s dead Marc, it was a direct hit. The Elaten bastards killed him!”
Marc’s best friend, John Muller, was the first casualty of the Human Elaten War.
