It's a whole different sensation - vaginal intercourse grips the whole penis, but more gently than anal, where as anal is a tighter, localised ring.
There's also a significant psychological element, as you note - it's a more intimate /rarer thing that many women either won't do or will only do under the "right" circumstances.
