People like what they like. I've driven a manual since the year zip. The only manual trans I truly hated was the old "three on the tree," which fortunately isn't made anymore. I hope.
Today's automatics give the driver much more control than the automatics of even a few years ago. And automatics are definitely easier in stop-and-go traffic.
But if you like total control and don't mind a little extra pedal work -- after a while, you don't even think about it -- go manual.
As for clutch replacement, my first cars generally needed a clutch at around 90-120K, but my '92 Integra's clutch is going strong at 165K. Of course, in the old days I lived in San Francisco :-).
