Quadrette took it when we first started dating. She had similar experiences to the ones above. I asked her to contribute her opinion to this thread, so here it is:

i took depo for about 1 year, maybe a little less. at first, it was great - one shot for 3 mos, and i never thought about it again. there was some weight gain, but not enough for me to care. i didn't notice too much in terms of emotional roller coaster issues - but then, i was melodramatic to begin with.

it didn't even strike me as weird to not have a period at all - i was delighted! but after about 6 mos or so, i started getting random bleedthrough action - a little here or there is fine, but when you suddenly realize you've ruined your new boyfriend's sheets (lucky Quadro), it's a little upsetting.
mind you, not EVERYONE has these kinds of issues, but i did. this from a gal who never had much concern over her monthly to begin with - it was always around, but pretty easy to deal with compared to other girls. try it - but the minute you get bleedthrough more than once for more than one week - do something else.

So there you have it. The spotting just eventually became too much to deal with. She initially took it because she was worried that she wouldn't remember to take a daily pill, but like everything else, it's become second nature.
