this isnt new and i know why the companies do this. The largest reason is to curb piracy in Europe and Germany. In other parts of the world CD's are VERY expensive and piracy is rampant. In Germany in particular it is big business and is very much a big deal in Europe. Similar to software piracy in china, once a glut of illegal cd's get made in Germany, they spread all over europe cutting into the artist's and label's profits. BMG/Universal is taking the biggest hit of all the record lables overseas and developed this scheme to stop it. Im not sure if it's gonna fly in the States though, I have a few of the CD's listed and they play on my computer fine.
