bernadette, it came from the Lindy Chamberlain mystery/story...
Lindy and her young family were camping out at Uluru (Ayres Rock), and in the middle of the night, her baby Azaria disappeared. and its corpse was never found.
Lindy had left her children in a tent alone for a little while, and when she returned, she saw a dingo taking something out of her tent... the record says that she called out, ¨a dingo took my baby!¨.
she claimed that a dingo took the baby.
since this is a fairly wild story, by any stretch of the imagination (dingos are dangerous, especially to children, but actually taking a baby is hard to believe), the blame was squarely placed on her.
she was unfairly condemned by the Aussie media... and she and her family were harassed by this media for years.
some reporters even made connections between the fact that they were Seventh Day Adventist and that the name Azaria meant, ´sacrifice in the desert´... sick, i know.
sicker yet is that someone recently bought the ripped and bloodied little jumpsuit that Azaria was wearing.
Lindy never showed too much emotion, and that was probably another reason as to her condemnation by the media.
Lindys husband Michael was also guilty in the eyes of the media (they used images of him smoking in quit smoking ads).
they were initially found not guilty in a coronial inquest, but a year later, Lindy was charged with the murder of her daughter, and Michael was charged with accessory.
they were both found guilty, and i think Lindy served 6 years in prison, i´m not sure. but after that time, they were eventually pardoned.
the way the media reacted was truly criminal. and the police handling of the case was laughable... they had to pay millions in compensation to the chamberlains at the end of it all.
wow, sorry that turned into a bit of a rant...
