I am little suprised that Liverpool seems to be getting a hard time they have just been awarded a city of culture award to be staged in I think 2005. There is a lot to see with the maritime museums at the docks and the Beatles exhibtion. There is a vibrant night life in Liverpool with some of the most sophisticated bars you will find anywhere.
The bad press comes from years back when the city was one of the most run down in western europe but those days are well and truly gone. There is now a huge student population alongside the charasmatic locals giving Liverpool a cosmopolitan feel. The crime there is like any other large city and the usual cautions apply but I would say that it would be safer to visit than Prague which is rapidly gaining a reputation for tourist related crime. For anyone going to Ireland then Liverpool is the ideal place to go from with cheap flights and a regular ferry service.
