Godins are pretty good provided you can get them in the U.S. $350 CAD gets you a very nice guitar made in Canada using american parts rather then the korean stuff. Amp-wise, stay away from low-end peaveys. Crates are good, and you should also look into roland cubes which are pretty solid for beginners. You can even buy mine since im getting a POD ;p
