The problem was that water was not draining at all from the dish washer. As suggested, I checked 2 most obvious things. I took apart the cover of the drain and cleaned it out as much as I could reach. I got some gunk out. I also cleaned the air gap. There were still some liquid sitting in the dish washer so I disconnected the drain pipe and sucked on it little bit to prime it so whatever remained drained.
I was encouraged by the fact that I was able to get the water out and put everything back together and ran the dish washer again and everything was fine.
