Definately can't beat a good gas range. My parents have a glass-top amana gas range. It's awesome. Easy clean-up rocks.
I have been living in apartments for the last few years, which means that I've been stuck in electric hell. I love gas--you just can't beat the control of real fire, and you don't have the 30% line loss of electricity.
The heat output is very dependant on the range. I have one element on my current range that throws off a tremendous amount of heat. It boils water really quickly. It takes 5-10 minutes to cool off, though. One of my friends actually had a gas range in his apartment, but all of the burners were really tiny. It took forever to heat enything up.
Basically, you need a quality gas range. I'll spend $1300 on a range, no problem. If I'm going to use it every day, I want something that doesn't suck.
Shit, I'm gonna end up spending $50,000 on my kitchen when I get a house. heh.
