Hayden's acting wasn't fantastic but to quote a line he uses in the film "he's holding me back!", I believe 'he' is George Lucas. Lucas is a control-freak who wrote a campy (though loveable) script and didn't let his actors roll with the lines. Apparently in Episode III Lucas has told his actors to improv here and there and be more relaxed.
I'm probably just a big ol' geek but I find the scene where Anakin confesses to Padme about killing all the Tusken Raiders very chilling (especially on the DVD version where he says "I'm a Jedi, I know I'm better than this.".
Hopefully Hayden will be able to come into his own in Ep3. Regardless I'm going to enjoy and love the film as any devout Star Wars fan will.
