Here's a hint when writing an English essay:
If you don't know how to spell it, look it up in the dictionary.
If it's not in the dictionary, don't use it.
Although given the recent rash of "updating" (*cough* dumbing down *cough*) the dictionary, even this strategy is far from infallible. Now THAT is
