Hmm, this thread got me thinking in a roundabout way and I made a connection. Here is the conclusion I came to:
Kissing (mouth open, with tongue) reduces heartburn.
Here's my logic:
mouth open, with tongue == lots of saliva
sucking on hard candies == lots of saliva
lots of saliva == reduces level of acidity
reduced acidity == reduced heartburn
