the sword carried in "Braveheart" was, if I remember right, something like a 4 or 5 foot Claymore. good sword, double edged, double handed, and powerful as all heck, but rather slow compared to most swords. The sword carried in Gladiator (of the various swords shown in the movie, I refer to those used in the arena the most) was most likely a Gladius. Roman shortsword, well-balanced, double edged, and usually one handed, to be used with a shield (I think). If memory serves, it was better for stabbing than slashing, though relatively lightweight. Personally, I favor a katana, both for the edge and the weight, even though it's not the best for stabbing, nor for chopping, really. Slashing, though, you'd have a hard time finding a better sword.
