That is a really cool gift, and thoughtful. You got the canoe and the time spent working on it. For as long as I can remember my father has just written me a check for my birthday. Money is nice, but not very thoughtful.
My mom once gave me a stained glass lamp that she made herself. That was very nice.
My wife gave me a really nice fountain pen one year because she knew that I like to write letters to friends. I'll probably have that pen for a long time.
