Does anyone have any advice for removing 2 old azalea bushes from the front of my home?

We just bought the house, so I'm not sure of their age, but they are huge. I've trimmed all the branches down to nubs and have started cutting through some of the main roots which are woody and a couple of inches thick.

Is there an easier way?
