Well, there were no more than 7 individuals on the planet some time around the end of the last ice age...that's about 10-12,000 years ago. Nobody's sure how many are left now, but estimates put it at much less than 10,000. However, they would be doing just fine if we hadn't hunted them all out of the picture!
