Sorry guys, it appears I am the recipient of bad information from a trusted source.
Berserker (and I assume Assassin and Lizardman) are unlockable characters. I just unlocked Berserker, he is not selectable everywhere, but he is selectable in the PvP mode. That is the one I checked. In arcade and WMM he is not selectable.
